Earth Retaining
Structures
Earth retaining structures hold back material such as soil and/or rocks. Common earth retaining structures, such as retaining walls, are typically made of masonry and concrete. Sizes vary depending on the slope of the site and the volume of material needing to be retained. Some are less than 4 feet tall while others can be 20+ feet, such as those seen near major roadways and freeways.

Often homeowners call us for guidance on building retaining walls themselves or to modify their fences. A good rule is to call your city to find out if you will need a permit. You will want to check with your Home Owner's Association (HOA) to make sure such changes are allowed.
